What does payload capacity mean?
In essence, a payload figure is how much you can carry, and when it comes to utes itβs a number you should have etched in the back of your head.
Itβs important to remember that payload is reduced by every additional accessory, driver and passenger on board; itβs not just about whatβs in the tray.

A full tank of fuel is included in the Australian definition for kerb weight, unlike in some other markets that use varying parameters.
Add kerb weight and payload together and you have your GVM or gross vehicle mass, which is the maximum your vehicle can weigh.
Payload/GVM figures are strictly enforced by police in Australia so theyβre numbers you need to know and watch.

What are the heaviest cars sold in Australia?

Weβve done some digging to find out which cars in Australia are the heaviest on the road
Letβs face it: cars are getting heavier and heavier with each new model year.
According to Bloomberg, in the United States alone, the average passenger car has grown by more than 1000 pounds, or around 450 kilograms since the 1980s.
And with electric cars becoming much more common, a vehicleβs weight now needs to factor in a pretty hefty battery pack that can weigh anywhere between 450kg and 900kg.

But here at Chasing Cars, we wanted to find out exactly what the heaviest cars on sale in Australia were.
Letβs take a look. All figures listed are kerb weights.
The heaviest combustion cars
The heaviest combustion SUV in Australia β Nissan Patrol Warrior β 2800kg
The heaviest combustion sedan in Australia β Rolls Royce Phantom β 2610kg
The heaviest ute in Australia: Ram 2500 β 3742kg

The heaviest electric vehicles
The heaviest electric SUV in Australia: Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV β 2730kg
The heaviest electric car in Australia: Rolls Royce Spectre β 2890kg
But not all electric cars are heavy⦠here are the lightest variants on sale
BYD Dolphin Dynamic β 1506kg
GWM Ora Standard Range β 1540kg
MG ZS EV Excite β 1570kg
MG4 Excite 51 β 1655kg

And just for funβ¦
Some of the lightest combustion cars in Australia
Suzuki Ignis β 865kg
Suzuki Swift β 870kg
Kia Picanto β 976kg

Our findings wrapped
Here are some key insights from when we compared all of the weights on our spreadsheet.
A Nissan Patrol Warrior is the equivalent weight of three Suzuki Ignis small SUVs stacked on top of eachother.
Electric vehicles are getting very heavy β a 2695kg BMW i7 sedan weighs roughly the same as a Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ZR2 pickup.

The Toyota Granvia eight-seat van weighs a staggering 2745kg β a significant amount for a people mover (even before you fill all eight seats) and 611kg more than a Kia Carnival Platinum.
Cars that we thought were lighter than expected were the 1820kg Hyundai Santa Fe large SUV, the 1865kg Volkswagen Transporter van and even the 1965kg GWM Cannon ute β all of which are lighter than some of their key rivals.

Premium SUVs are becoming very heavy, with the new Mazda CX-90 weighing in at 2220kg for the high-spec Azami Takumi grade, while the Volvo XC90 Recharge Ultimate weighs a significant 2317kg.
Smaller electric SUVs need to hit the gym, with the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT weighing in at 2281kg and the Audi Q8 E-Tron a pretty hefty 2520kg.
