The Xiaomi YU7’s prowess is unlikely to be confined to China. Xiaomi has indicated plans for international exports, with potential deployments outside of China beginning in 2027. While specific models for these markets are yet to be confirmed, the prospect of the YU7 or SU7 reaching Western shores should send shivers down the spines of established automakers.

My visit underscored the immense brand loyalty and admiration Xiaomi commands within China. Specifically, at least 240,000 fewer buyers will be available for other manufacturers. For Tesla, the situation is particularly precarious. While China has historically bolstered Tesla’s global sales, the Model 3 has struggled to recover, and the Model Y, despite incentives, is now facing a formidable challenger. The perception that Tesla feels “played out” among some Chinese consumers, coupled with the YU7’s clear superiority in nearly every metric, suggests that continued reliance on the Model Y in China may be a delusional strategy.
