Is the 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT Still a Contender in the Electric Super-Sedan Arena? A Veteran’s Take

It’s been a wild ride watching the electric vehicle (EV) landscape explode over the last decade. I remember back in 2015, the options were limited, and frankly, a bit underwhelming for those of us used to high-performance machines. Fast forward to 2025, and we’re swimming in a sea of powerful EVs, each vying for a piece of the pie. The Audi RS e-tron GT, first unveiled in early 2021, entered this fray with a bang. But in a market that evolves faster than Moore’s Law, the question remains: Does it still hold its own against the latest challengers?

The Audi RS e-tron GT arrived on the scene aiming to redefine the electric grand tourer. This beauty boasts a striking design and thrilling performance, but the competition has intensified. Rivals such as the Lucid Air, Tesla Model S Plaid, and Mercedes-AMG EQS are constantly pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology.

Beauty and the Beast: Design and First Impressions

Let’s be honest, the RS e-tron GT is a looker. Sharing its underpinnings with the Porsche Taycan thanks to a collaborative effort between the two manufacturers, the Audi distinguishes itself with a far more dramatic design. While the Taycan opts for a sleek, minimalist aesthetic, the Audi RS e-tron GT flaunts sculpted lines that accentuate its flared fenders and wide stance.

The full-width LED taillight bar is a masterstroke, visually widening the car and giving it an unmistakable presence on the road. Up front, the bold, body-colored grille and aggressive headlights further enhance the car’s sporty appeal. My personal favorite touch? The availability of unique colors like Tactical Green Metallic (paired with a Santos Brown leather interior – chef’s kiss!). It’s refreshing to see a manufacturer offer something beyond the usual shades of silver and gray. High-CPC keywords such as “luxury electric vehicle” and “performance EV” immediately come to mind when describing the visual appeal.

Performance: Numbers vs. the Real World

On paper, the Audi RS e-tron GT delivers impressive figures. The standard e-tron GT produces 469 horsepower, but the RS version ups the ante to 590 hp, with a temporary boost mode pushing it to 637 hp. This translates to a blistering 0-60 mph time of around 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. But here’s where things get interesting.

While these stats are undoubtedly impressive, rivals like the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance (1,050 hp, 2.6 seconds to 60 mph) and Tesla Model S Plaid (1,020 hp, 1.99 seconds to 60 mph) boast quicker acceleration times. Even the Porsche Taycan Turbo (616 hp, 2.6 seconds to 60 mph) matches the Lucid’s performance. The Mercedes-AMG EQS Sedan (3.4 seconds to 60 mph) lags slightly behind.

However, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. The Audi RS e-tron GT, along with the Porsche Taycan, utilizes a two-speed transmission, unlike the single-speed units found in the Lucid, Tesla, and Mercedes-AMG. This gives the Audi a distinct advantage in real-world driving situations. While the single-speed cars offer explosive off-the-line acceleration, their ferocity tends to wane at higher speeds. The RS e-tron GT’s two-speed gearbox allows it to maintain its impressive acceleration even at highway speeds, making it feel just as quick, if not quicker, than its more powerful rivals in everyday driving scenarios. This is where the “grand tourer” aspect shines through.

Handling and Ride Quality: Finding the Sweet Spot

Beyond straight-line speed, the Audi RS e-tron GT truly shines in the handling department. While it shares its fundamental structure with the Porsche Taycan, Audi has tuned the suspension to be more compliant, thanks to its adaptive air suspension system. This makes the RS e-tron GT a more comfortable daily driver than its Porsche sibling, without sacrificing its sporty character.

Think of it this way: the Taycan is a pure sports sedan, while the RS e-tron GT is an athletic grand tourer, offering a more refined and balanced driving experience. When you point the RS e-tron GT down a twisty road, it feels remarkably agile for a 5,100-pound sedan. It grips tenaciously, turns in sharply, and stops with confidence. The car remains composed and balanced through corners, putting its power down effectively on the way out. My test car was equipped with the optional (and pricey at $7,100) carbon ceramic brakes, which proved to be well worth the investment. They provided exceptional stopping power, even after repeated hard braking during spirited canyon runs. This is a key differentiator, making it an excellent choice for “electric vehicle enthusiasts” who want a car that handles as good as it looks.

Range and Charging: The Achilles Heel?

If there’s one area where the Audi RS e-tron GT falls slightly short, it’s range. With its 93.4 kWh battery pack, the EPA estimates its range at 238 miles, which is less than most of its direct competitors. For comparison, the Lucid Air boasts an impressive 446 miles of range, while the Tesla Model S offers 396 miles, and the Mercedes-AMG EQS provides 277 miles.

While 238 miles may be sufficient for daily commutes, it can become a concern on longer trips, especially if you enjoy pushing the car hard. The RS e-tron GT tends to consume electrons at a rapid pace when driven aggressively, which can lead to range anxiety. The local search intent keyword “Audi dealership near me” might be frequently searched by interested buyers.

However, the RS e-tron GT does redeem itself with its fast charging capabilities. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, it can charge at a peak rate of 270 kW, allowing it to replenish its battery from 10 to 80 percent in approximately 23 minutes at a compatible DC fast charging station.

Pricing and Value: Is it Worth the Premium?

The 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT starts at around $145,000, including destination charges. However, adding options like the carbon ceramic brakes ($7,100), carbon performance package ($6,450), and full leather interior package ($5,350) can quickly push the price tag to over $165,000.

This puts it in the same ballpark as the Lucid Air Grand Touring Performance and Mercedes-AMG EQS, but significantly more expensive than the Tesla Model S Plaid, especially with recent price cuts from Tesla. This is where potential buyers need to seriously consider their priorities. Are they purely focused on achieving the quickest 0-60 mph time and the longest range? Or are they looking for a more well-rounded and emotionally engaging driving experience?

The Verdict: A Thrilling Electric Grand Tourer for the Discerning Driver

So, is the 2025 Audi RS e-tron GT still a contender in the electric super-sedan arena? Absolutely. While it may not boast the quickest acceleration or the longest range, it offers a unique blend of stunning design, exhilarating performance, and refined handling that sets it apart from its rivals.

The Audi RS e-tron GT appeals to a different type of enthusiast, one who values the overall driving experience over sheer numbers. It’s a car that makes you feel special every time you get behind the wheel. It’s an emotional purchase, not a purely rational one.

The Audi RS e-tron GT nails what a high-performance EV should be. It delivers thrills behind the wheel. It’s a statement. It’s a car that you buy because you love it, not just because it’s the fastest or the most efficient. After all, there’s more to a car than just the stats.

If you’re in the market for a luxury electric vehicle that’s as beautiful as it is fun to drive, the Audi RS e-tron GT deserves a serious look. Considering a trade-in? Visit your local “Audi dealership in [Your City]” for a test drive and experience the thrill for yourself!
