Mercedes-AMG SL 43: A Ten-Year Veteran’s Take on Whether Less is More

As a seasoned auto industry insider with over a decade immersed in the world of high-performance vehicles, I’ve witnessed firsthand the evolution of iconic models. The Mercedes-AMG SL, a name synonymous with luxury and performance, has always held a special place in automotive history. The latest generation, however, presents a unique proposition: the SL 43, a four-cylinder variant entering a lineage traditionally dominated by powerful V8s. Is this a bold step forward, a compromise too far, or the clever democratization of an icon? Let’s dive in.

The Mercedes-AMG SL, especially in cities like Los Angeles and Miami, symbolizes a certain lifestyle. The redesigned SL marked a shift, placing the AMG badge front and center, signaling a renewed focus on performance. While this resonated with enthusiasts, it also elevated the price point, creating a void in the market. The SL 55 and SL 63, while undeniably impressive, commanded hefty price tags, leaving many potential buyers yearning for a more accessible entry point. This is where the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 steps in, aiming to bridge that gap.

But does it succeed? At a starting MSRP significantly lower than its V8 siblings, the SL 43 presents an enticing proposition. However, the trade-offs are evident. Gone is the signature AMG 4.0-liter V8, replaced by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The all-wheel-drive system, a staple of the higher-end models, is also absent, along with torque vectoring and active anti-roll stabilization. The question then becomes: can the SL 43 deliver a true AMG experience without these hallmark features? Can a lighter engine offer the same thrills, or will enthusiasts be left wanting more?

The Heart of the Matter: The Turbocharged Four-Cylinder

Let’s address the elephant in the room: the engine. The SL 43 boasts a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, a powerplant shared with AMG’s acclaimed “45” series models. However, this isn’t a simple transplant. The SL 43 incorporates an innovative electric turbocharger, a technology derived from Formula 1. This ingenious system places a small electric motor between the turbine and compressor wheels, enabling near-instantaneous spooling and significantly improved throttle response. This is a significant upgrade from traditional turbo lag, something many drivers in the luxury sport market have struggled with.

The result is an impressive 375 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque. While these figures might seem modest for a grand tourer, especially one nearing the 4,000-pound mark, the engine’s character is what truly shines. It’s a spirited, eager powerplant that punches well above its weight class. Paired with a responsive nine-speed multi-clutch transmission, the SL 43 confidently delivers power to the rear wheels. While it may lack the raw grunt of the SL 55’s V8, the four-cylinder’s responsiveness and willingness to rev make it a surprisingly engaging companion. I’d wager that most drivers wouldn’t miss the extra horsepower in everyday driving scenarios. For drivers looking for used cars in a few years, this engine could also be a selling point.

The exhaust note, while not as thunderous as the V8’s guttural roar, is far from disappointing. It’s a surprisingly deep, resonant growl, augmented by distinct turbocharger sounds that add to the aural drama. While it doesn’t replicate the V8 symphony, it creates a unique and enjoyable soundtrack that complements the driving experience. This attention to detail in the performance upgrades is what sets AMG apart.

Handling and Dynamics: Agile and Engaging

Beyond the engine, the SL 43’s handling prowess is another pleasant surprise. While it may not be significantly lighter than its V8 counterparts, it retains much of the agility and balance that define the SL lineage. The front end is remarkably grippy, and the steering is precise and responsive, allowing for confident cornering. The car dives into turns with minimal body roll, inspiring confidence and encouraging spirited driving. What’s particularly impressive is that it achieves this level of performance without the aid of active suspension components, relying instead on a well-tuned combination of conventional shocks and steel springs.

Grand Touring Compromises: Where the SL 43 Falters

However, the SL 43’s compromises become apparent in the areas where a grand tourer should excel: comfort and refinement. While the engine delivers an exhilarating experience on open roads, its character shifts in less demanding situations. Even in Comfort mode, the engine never truly settles down, exhibiting a noticeable level of vibration, especially at idle.

Around town, the powertrain calibration can be frustrating. The throttle response can be overly sensitive, making smooth acceleration a challenge. The nine-speed transmission, while generally responsive, can sometimes hesitate when called upon for sudden bursts of power, leaving the engine feeling slightly out of sync. As a result, the SL 43 lacks the dual-personality of its V8 siblings, feeling less refined and composed in everyday driving scenarios. For prospective buyers in major metropolitan areas like New York City or Chicago, this lack of refinement could be a deal-breaker.

Aesthetic Appeal and Interior Comfort: Maintaining the SL Standard

Fortunately, the SL 43 doesn’t compromise on aesthetics or interior quality. The exterior design remains largely unchanged, retaining the sleek lines and elegant proportions that define the SL. Subtle differences, such as updated bumpers and rounded exhaust tips, are difficult to discern without a keen eye. For those who appreciate the SL’s stunning looks but were previously deterred by its high price tag, the SL 43 offers an attractive alternative. Luxury car detailing can further enhance the SL 43’s visual appeal.

The interior is equally impressive, mirroring the design and materials found in the higher-end models. The 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and vertically oriented 11.9-inch central touchscreen are seamlessly integrated, creating a modern and luxurious cabin. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and the retractable soft top operates smoothly, allowing for open-air enjoyment in just 15 seconds at speeds up to 37 mph. Despite the four-cylinder engine, the cabin remains well-insulated from wind and road noise, providing a comfortable and serene environment, especially at higher speeds. This blend of technology and luxury is a hallmark of the Mercedes-AMG brand.

The Verdict: A Promising Foundation with Room for Improvement

So, is the SL 43 worth the price discount? The answer, like most things in the automotive world, is nuanced. Taking my test vehicle’s as-tested price as an example, it represents a significant saving compared to a similarly equipped SL 63. Yet, the “entry-level” model boasts the same stunning looks and a comparable interior, with many of the same optional features available. The SL 43 opens the door to a wider audience, making the SL dream more attainable.

However, the SL 43’s current issues stem primarily from the engine and transmission calibration. These are the types of issues that Mercedes-AMG can address and refine in future model years. It would be a mistake to dismiss this car solely based on its cylinder count. While I personally prefer the V8-powered SLs for their charismatic sound and greater versatility, the four-cylinder engine possesses its own unique character and deserves its place under the SL’s hood. It simply requires further refinement to truly shine.

The SL 43 demonstrates that a car with exceptional bones doesn’t necessarily require all the bells and whistles to deliver a memorable driving experience. Once Mercedes-AMG addresses the powertrain quirks, I believe the SL 43 has the potential to become the perfect addition to the SL lineup, offering a compelling blend of performance, luxury, and value. For driving enthusiasts considering the SL family, the Mercedes-AMG SL 43 presents a unique and potentially rewarding option.
